Finland’s taxi plates in 2027: when will passengers see the change?
Traficom announced its taxi-plate regulation on 23 September 2026. Distinctively coloured taxi registration plates will be issued from 1 January 2027 and become mandatory in taxi traffic on 1 July 2027.
Two dates, two stages
January starts the rollout; July starts mandatory use. Passengers travelling in autumn 2026 should not expect every taxi to have the new plates already.
Meter inspections have a separate date
Traficom’s 2 September vehicle-regulation update schedules inspection checks for mandatory taximeters from 1 February 2027 and checks relating to taxi plates from July. These are separate changes within the wider reform.
What to check when booking
Plate information concerns identification and the rollout timetable. It does not tell you your journey price, advance-booking conditions or whether a car is available. Those remain separate questions for your booking.
For a Tampere journey, start with the distance and estimated duration. Then compare the provider’s quote with the calculated estimate, checking that both cover the same services. A new identifier is not a reason to assume two different booking offers are equivalent.
